Rhine-Bridge compromises the Loreley's world cultural heritage status
St. Goarshausen - 2008-02-08 - K. Asmuss
In order to strengthen its economy and employment situation, the governing Mayor of St. Goarshausen plans a bridge over the Rhine. As the town bewails a movement of labour as well as of inhabitants, St. Goarshausen hopes to participate in the other riverside’s increasing prosperity. As the project envisages the area on the eve of the Loreley’s rock, it endangers the region’s status as World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine”. Thus, experts of ICOMOS already alert the loss of this title. With regard to the rejection of alternative, but more expensive plans - consisting in a tunnel option or in building the bridge outside of the Loreley’s site - Prof. Petzet, president of ICOMOS, advises urgently to reject any plan of crossing the river in the region. In the meantime the UNESCO announced the visit of experts during the month of February.
